Erm, Going to try to summarise here....

Alright so Nick, Amy and I talked to Floyd (not sure how to spell...) about our rock climbing game. The key feedback we got seemed to be "Don't think, do".

So from this we basically thought the best course of action was for everyone to think up various ways we can change the basic up and down rock climbing experience and try it on Wednesday (e.g climbing with only one hand, or having to collect targets). From there the people who end up trying it out can figure out what was the most fun.

The laser idea:
We built on this with the possibility of a special webcam from logitech which can rotate up and down with the laserpointer attached to the top. This could then be controlled by the third team member on the computer using arrow keys.

Extra ideas:
Fantasy element - Projecting a game area onto the rockclimbing course which creates obstacles to dodge, battle or maneuver around. This could also be potentially coupled with headphones or some sort of audio feed which changes depending on your position with respect to the other team's climber.

Things to keep in mind:
"Have you thought why you are trying to 'improve' rock-climbing? Are you improving it? If so, why? Or are you making it more accessible? Or more engaging? What do you tell a rock-climber who might say: but rock-climbing is great on its own? Why do we need to add computers?"
-Floyd

- A way to keep both players equally matched without any form of literal handicap on a more experienced player

Those are the main points I could remember. I would have published last night but my net cut out. So Amy, Nick, if you have anything to add please do :D

And I think it would be a good idea to start compiling a blog list of ways we can alter the rock climbing for Wednesday.

  1. Thanks for the info, so if we are testing this at the rock climbing place do we need to book it and how much will it cost?

Also, we need to be certain we are going to be able to get our hands on two pairs of nightvision goggles because as I understand, both the person controlling the ropes and the person lighting up the path will need them.

To be honest I don't think we are making rock climbing more accessible with this game... in fact we are making it far more difficult. Not that this is a bad thing, I guess this game is more about giving rock climbers the opportunity to extend their abilities after countless climbs using the same old methods.

  2. Floyd also brought up the idea that we may be able to project rising water on to the wall and make it a 'vertical race' of sorts which would make it much easier to implement. You could, as mentioned before use audio between two people. Possibly altering scores/time and other things to provide a level playing field

  3. I think the rising water is something we discussed at the elevators. I looked into it, night vision glasses from some place like amazon look like $33-ish a pop.

  4. Oh and the rockclimbing including shoe and harness hire is 27 bucks.

  5. Okay sweet, I've got to say, I really love that rising water idea. It might be cool if we projected something falling from the roof once you are at the top, in which case you would have to move down the wall again. I'm guessing this would be at night too which would make things interesting. So are we definitely all in for this rock-climbing on wednesday? and what time were you thinking?

  7. I was thinking after our games lecture, it gives those who have the studio later 4 hours. Hard rock climbing website:

I would suggest we book as a group, which means whoever wants to be leader will need to fill out this:

On the behalf of the group, Ideally handing it in Tuesday or Wednesday morning so they have notice. Everyone needs to also fill out additional forms on the site. If we fill these out before we show up it will also save us time... Just a thought. :D I'm really excited.

  8. I think you should be the leader because you are by far the most mature in the group :P

Anyway, I'm filling out my form now, will bring it Tuesday. I'm actually really looking forward to this! Hopefully we won't fall and die.

  9. We could also have challenges like picking up a series of flags - in specific orders. Like at the start of the round, the team will draw a strip with a line of coloured dots and the climber has to get each marker in order so there is more up-and-down climbing and communication?

Though really I wanna try the water rising one
